Concept overview
White Canvas is a mobile application designed to empower blind and visually impaired users to participate actively in the interior design process of their homes.
Problem and Opportunity
Traditional interior design resources often exclude individuals with visual impairments, hindering their ability to create comfortable and inspiring living spaces. White Canvas aims to bridge this gap by providing an accessible and user-centered design experience.
Meet the users
While in-person interviews weren't possible for this project, I explored the world of blind YouTubers creating interior design content. By watching and analyzing their videos and interviews, I could learn about their experiences. From their personalities, quotes, and ideas, I built user personas to understand the needs and challenges they face when designing their dream homes. These personas became my guide for creating a truly accessible app.
Your Canvas, Your Story
A home should be a haven of comfort, security, and inspiration – a place where everyone feels empowered to express themselves. Not seeing the world the way others do, doesn't mean you can't experience its beauty and create a space you love.
Everything starts with a...
White Canvas empowers users to personalize their dream space through a suite of intuitive features:
Design considerations
This project prioritizes clear visual communication. Clean layouts prevent information overload and guide the user's eye towards the most important elements. A clear font promotes readability across different user groups, and component sizing is strategically chosen to create a visually balanced and harmonious interface.
Accessibility:
This project isn't just about looking good, it's about making sure everyone can use it. Here's how I've kept accessibility in mind:
Color Palette: A high-contrast color palette, primarily composed of purple and green tones, was chosen to ensure optimal visibility for users with various forms of color blindness.
Clear and organized content structure: Facilitates easy navigation for screen readers but benefits everyone by making the app intuitive and easy to navigate.
Camera search: Enables image recognition for identifying design elements within a physical space.
Accessibility filters: Allows users to refine searches based on specific needs, such as color contrast or tactile considerations.
Collaboration with Accessible Designers: Partners users with designers equipped to create inclusive living spaces.
Descriptive ALT text for images: Ensures images are understood by users relying on voice-over technology.
AI-powered content reading: Integrates AI to read specific details within design photos, expanding information access.
